Seventeen year old Noa has been kicked out of her home after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier during the occupation of Holland. Heartbroken after having to give up her baby for adoption, she has taken a job at a German train/rail station cleaning in order to have a place to live.

One day Noa discovers a train car full of Jewish infants, many of which are dead or dying. She finds a baby who resembles the son she gave up and in a moment of desperation, she grabs the baby and hides him until the train leaves. She leaves with the baby that night with no where to go and no plan in mind. She collapses during the snowy night and is rescued by a traveling German circus. She tells them the baby with her is her younger brother.

Astrid grew up on a circus and leaves it as a young woman to marry a German soldier. She is happiuly married until one day he comes home and tells her that they need to divorce. Nazis have been given orders to divorce their Jewish wives. Heartbroken she is cast aside and left to fend for herself. She had not heard from her family and learns that they are missing and possibly have been taken by the Nazis. A family friend agrees to let her join his circus and hide her in plain sight.

Astrid and Noa meet at the circus. The Circus director wants Astrid to teach Noa how to become a aerialist/trapeze artist. At first rivals they becomes fast friends. Each share their secrets with each other. Will their secrets remain a secret? Will they ever be found out? What danger awaits?

This is a book about love, friendship, secrets, loss, sacrifice, courage, the bonds we form with others, what we are willing to do (or not do) for love. The story was very easy to follow and I was surprised at the end. I felt it was a little slow in the beginning but as I kept reading, I found myself drawn more and more to the story.
