A young man wins an all expense “second chances” trip to California. He does not recall entering the contest but after a phone call determines that the trip is legitimate, he makes plans for his trip to California. The young writer would even like to invite his neighbor to accompany him but she declines telling him to enjoy himself. Once in California, while driving to his hotel, he meets an intriguing young woman who loves to surf. He is immediately drawn to her and wonders about the diner owner’s questioning eye. He’s happy, everything seems to be going great – is there more going on than meet’s the eye?

I don’t want to say anything else about this book/short story/novella except that I really enjoyed it. Some unexpected things occur which leaves our protagonist (and the reader) scratching his head. The ending had a twist and was a nice surprise. Due to the number of pages, I do not want to say more about Surfer Girl as I don’t want to give away too much of the story. Except that it was a surprise and I enjoyed it!

If you like short stories/novellas, I highly recommend this one!

Buford is a former Arizona State Trooper living in Galveston. One night while he is out, he comes across a young woman (Cadace) trying to figure out what is wrong with her vehicle. Burford pulls over to assist her and is instantly drawn to her even with their age difference. When it becomes evident that neither of them can fix her vehicle, Buford invites her to his home for the night. Burford has a lot of experience reading people and he knows that there is more to her story than she has initially told him.

After becoming lovers they decide to confide in each other. Buford tells her about a shooting in his past which haunts him to this day. Cadace tells him her secret(s) and Buford agrees to help her. Their romance moves VERY fast – but I get that this is a short story/novella and that needs to happen to move the story along. After both confide in each other, they decide to take a risk. The risk is huge but both are willing to take the risk.

Will their risk pay off? Will they be able to live happily ever after? Read and find out!
