When Jorie, the girl with “hair of fire” went to live with her Aunt at Mortimer Manor, she had no idea what lie in store for her. On her first day at the Manor, Jorie discovers a book hidden under the floorboards. The book is about dragons and has mysterious writing she has never seen before. She soon befriends Rufus, the boy living with his Grandfather next door. They quickly become friends and begin exploring the Tam (small lake/pond) together. Soon Jorie befriends a “talking” cat who tells her about life beneath the Tam. Looking for adventure she uses the four mysterious words and enters the mysterious world. She returns home after a short visit and wants to bring Rufus with her to the enchanted land. Jorie and Rufus return to the land of Cabrynthius where they meet a dragon named Grootmonya who sends them on a quest to find the magic stones of Maalogto. The pair need these magical stones to save the land from the evil half dragon who wants to rule and have all of the power for himself. Jorie and Rufus encounter both good and evil characters including a baby dragon, an greedy power hungry professor, caves of fire, the sad daughter of the bad half dragon and a deadly butterfly.

On their quest the children learn about bravery, loyalty, friendship, courage, and teamwork. This is a fantasy book for children which focuses on good vs. evil, friendship, loyalty, and belief in yourself. Both characters have their own strengths which play nicely off the other.

The book had the right amount of pacing for younger readers. The plot was pretty straight forward and the dialogue and writing were appropriate for younger readers with the exception of the fantasy names such “Grootmonya.” The book is an easy and interesting read. Young fans of fantasy, magical lands, dragons and ancient places will enjoy this book.

I received a copy of this book from book publicity services in exchange for an honest review.
