Sara returns home to Grant County for the first time since her Husband Jeffreys untimely death (Murder). This is a very emotional time for her which is made worse by a phone call which brings her back into contact with the police force and dear God no, Lena. Sara hold Lena responsible for her husband’s murder and will tell anyone who cares to listen this.
Sara agrees to meet Frank at the police station where they find the prisoner who requested to see her dead in his cell. A prisoner who Lena arrested, interrogated and put in this cell. Sara promptly calls the GBI and special agent, Will Trent arrives to investigate the man’s death in police custody. He quickly learns that the police there are not forthcoming with information, some out right lie to his face and set up road blocks for his investigation. He also gets to meet Sara’s family who quickly welcome him and hope for possibly some romance for their grieving daughter and sister.
It quickly becomes two cases. Who killed a young woman and her boyfriend? Why did the man commit suicide in police custody? How are these cases related? Why is there a cover up? Will Lena ever be held accountable for her actions?
Will continues to be an interesting character who is drawn to Sara. Their attraction is growing. Their friendship is deepening. I can’t help but root for these two individuals who have suffered so much in their pasts.
Again, the action, the character development, the twists and turns of the story kept me engaged. Slaughter does her research and shines when discussing forensics whether it be police procedures, the law or even autopsies. She writes about heartaches, emotions laid bare, fear, anger, longing all with her brilliant prose.
